Umbraco 16

Umbraco

Umbraco 16 is the latest version of Umbraco CMS. While not a complete overhaul, this version focuses on refinement, usability, and future-readiness building on the foundations laid in the previous major versions.

What are the Key Features in Umbraco 16?

Tiptap Rich Text Editor (Replacing TinyMCE)

Umbraco 16 officially replaces TinyMCE with Tiptap as the default rich text editor. This modern editor offers a cleaner interface and better extensibility. Although this may be a cause for concern for some website owners, Umbraco have put steps in place to ease the burden as existing data types using TinyMCE are automatically migrated to Tiptap during the upgrade process. Although it's worth noting this does not cover all customisations and plugins so things like toolbar configurations may need manual adjustment.

Also for those not wishing to migrate to Tiptap then there is a TinyMCE Umbraco package available to use and if this is installed before you upgrade to Umbraco 16 then the automated migration to TipTap is cancelled.

Property-Level Permissions

This new feature allows administrators to restrict editing access to specific properties within a content node. It’s a powerful tool for improving editorial workflows and ensuring content integrity.

Segment Support

Umbraco 16 introduces segment support, enabling content personalization based on user segments. This lays the groundwork for more dynamic and targeted content experiences.

Webhook Payload Options

Developers now have more control over webhook data with three payload options: Minimal, Extended, and Legacy. This flexibility helps optimize integrations and performance.

Editor Experience Enhancements

The back-office continues to evolve with improvements in accessibility, drag-and-drop media handling, and clipboard support for blocks. These changes aim to make the editing experience smoother and more intuitive.

Should You Upgrade to Umbraco 16?

Umbraco 16 has several new features and enhancements that could be useful to website owners and content editors alike. The new TipTap rich text editor looks to be a really nice addition and we're already seeing some benefits such as the improved drag and drop and filtering out of junk pasted in from other editors (i.e Microsoft Word). Also with the automated migration of TinyMCE properties it makes upgrading websites that have a lot of rich text editors relatively straight forward.

Again it is worth noting that Umbraco 16 is a STS (standard term support) version meaning it will enter its security phase in March 2026 and reach end of life on 12th June 2026.

It is always advisable to upgrade to the latest version of Umbraco where possible. However, with the next LTS version (Umbraco 17) due to be released later this year we're assuming this version may be bypassed by some website owners as they await the next LTS release.
