Umbraco 10 End-of-Life (EOL)

Umbraco

Umbraco 10 is set to reach its end of life (EOL) on 16th June 2025. This milestone marks the end of official support, including security patches and updates, which has significant implications for users and companies relying on this version.

What does Umbraco 10 reaching EOL mean?

In a few weeks Umbraco 10 will reach its end of life (EOL) which will formally mark the end of any form of support for that major version of Umbraco CMS. This means there will be no further security patches or updates released by Umbraco which can potentially leave websites still using this version of Umbraco vulnerable and could impact your company's compliance commitments. As no further updates will be provided for Umbraco 10 it also increases the likelihood of compatibility issues with more modern devices, operating systems and browsers.

How do you upgrade from Umbraco 10?

There are a few options for upgrading from Umbraco 10. The next available long term support (LTS) version is Umbraco 13 and updating from v10 to v13 should be relatively painless and will not reach EOL until December 2026.

However this is not the very latest version of Umbraco as Umbraco 16 has now been released. Although this is a standard term support (STS) version which will reach its own end of life in June 2026. The process for upgrading to Umbraco 16 is a little more complicated as you cannot jump directly from v10 to v16. Instead you would need to first upgrade to Umbraco 13 and then go through each of the other major versions (v14 and v15) due to each major version potentially introducing breaking changes.

You will also need to ensure your environment contains the necessary versions of .Net to run the newer versions of Umbraco. Umbraco 13 and 14 run on .Net 8 where as Umbraco 15 and 16 run on .NET 9.

Our Recommendations

We would always advise upgrading to a supported version of Umbraco as soon as possible to avoid any complications.

By choosing to upgrade to Umbraco 16 although the process may take longer you ensure that you get access to the very latest features and updates Umbraco CMS has to offer.

If you prefer to go through fewer updates on your website then upgrading to Umbraco 13 could be the best option to ensure you are still on a fully supported version of Umbraco.
